This list of the top personal development books features authors in every way, with advice on all manner of things, from financial well-being to recovery from trauma.

If you're reading this writing, we are on the cusp of 2025, which is kind of crazy to think about because I'm recording this writing way earlier in 2024,

but as we transition into the new year, it's very common for people to ask me one specific question:

What self-help book should I be reading, and which ones do you recommend? If you're new here, there's a reason they're asking me that question.

Dr. C. Nordine, and I am a PhD expert in mindset and behavior change.

So while there are a lot of best book to read for self-development out there, I'm pretty good at parsing out what's actually based on science,

what's actually going to be helpful, and what you should completely ignore.

So in this writing, I'm going to review my top five best books to read for self-development that you should read in 2025.

Benefit from a book to read for self-development!

Now I have to give one caveat before I start. I want you to very critically ask yourself if you're reading the book for self-development and self-improvement as a form of enjoyment.

as something that you like to do for fun, or whether you're reading them because you think they're going to bring you a result.

One of the things that our clients stumble into a lot by accident is procrastinating learning.

They're learning more about project breakdown instead of breaking down the actual project they need to do.

They're learning more about eating healthy instead of actually going to the fridge and cutting up vegetables.

If that's you, I want you to take a hard look at yourself right now and tell yourself,  I don't need any more information; I need to take action.

if you are that action-oriented person, I highly recommend you check out our changing membership because it's a great next step.

for self-help super fans who feel like they know it all, but they're not actually using what they've learned to make progress in their own lives.

All right, let's dive right into it. Here are my top five best books to read for self-development for 2025. Let's dive understanding into the book.

1. How to Have a Good Day by Caroline Webb.

Harness the power of behavioral science to transform your working life "How to Have a Good Day by Caroline Webb." I picked this one because it's actually a little bit less science-heavy than the majority of books I tend to recommend.

It's not written by someone who is a Ph.D.-level scientist or author, which is another thing I tend to emphasize.

However, what I absolutely love about this book is that she walks you through a normal day in your life, she gives you lots of tools and tips and tricks that you can actually take action on, and she does provide some pretty good citations and studies that go behind them.

A lot of books that operate like this that are very action-oriented do the action part really well but don't actually have the science to back it up, or they're cherry-picking specific studies that support their point but not actually looking at the full body of research.

This book, on the other hand, does a really good job of evaluating years of scientific research and coming to a single conclusion that's going to help you in your life, so I highly recommend checking this one out.

2. Books by Cal Newport So Good They Can't Ignore You and Deep Work:

Going to be completely on the opposite side of the spectrum in terms of scientific density, and that is "deep work." by Cal Newport You may have heard this one mentioned before.

Cal essentially reviews the science of how we establish focus and flow in our lives.

This is a great book for those of you who are really, really looking to improve your efficiency at work and change things about your workflow.

I will say this is a better fit for people who have a lot of control over their workday and over their work practices.

If you work somewhere where you don't have control over your environment or your schedule, this might not be the best book for you because a lot of the things that he's telling

you to manipulate, some people, quite frankly, just don't have the autonomy to manipulate in their workspace.

The other sort of downside of this book is that it's extremely dense scientifically;

if you're the kind of person who likes a more narrative-style self-help book, this is not going to be the one for you.

If you're the kind of person who really wants to read about economics research from 1990 and how that impacts our focus, then this is definitely going to be the book for you.

The other thing is that this is a great book to actually Google because there are a lot of people who have done overviews of this book,

and you can get the gist of the actionable stuff without having to wade through all the eyeballing.

Deep science: As someone who has a PhD and is very, very used to reading high-level scientific research,

this was dense for even me to get through but valuable at the same time. Do with that what you will.

3. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

Going to be subtracting this book is fascinating. It is similar to the book Essentialism, which I talked about in my last writing,

the "Best Book to Read for Self-development" in 2024. However, this book is interesting because it actually gives us the science of why it's so difficult to pare down our lives.

She talks about the cognitive.
The neuroscience behind how our brains find it difficult to take things away and find it very, very easy to add things to something else.

Again, this is a little bit more on the science side, but if you're working on essentialism in your life if you're working on doing less,

or if you struggle to figure out why you have such a difficult time picking one thing and sticking with it, this might give you some of the scientific insight:

The other really interesting thing about this book is I think it encourages you to take on less because she also talks about the power of doing less

...... and why doing less in some cases is actually going to make our brains work better,

so if you're looking for some motivation to simplify, downsize, and pursue less, I highly recommend checking this one out. Fourth on the list is something that I just read this past year; it's Know Thyself.

I really liked this book even though it is way more on the science side because it's actually about the science of meta cognition.

It's about how we as humans think about ourselves. This is an extremely existential book.

If you're already going through an existential crisis where you're thinking about your life and you're questioning.

who you are, this might not be the book to read because it's probably going to make that whole situation a lot worse.

However, if you're in a place where you're very curious about yourself, you're very curious about your own perceptions of yourself,

and you're willing to have some of those perceptions pushed at and challenged a little bit, I would highly recommend checking this one out.

The other thing about this book is that it does a great job of explaining what makes humans human and how our brains work fundamentally differently from any other animal species out there.

I thought that was a really interesting piece of this book, so if that's the kind of stuff you're interested in, this book might be a great choice for you. All right.

My last book is going to be aimed at my coaches and my business owners in the audience.

By the way, if you are a coach or business owner, make sure you're following me on Instagram because over there I do a ton of education on how to grow an effective and empowering coaching business.

My favorite book for business owners and coaches is 3 Word Rebellion. There are two reasons I really like this book.

Number one, it's an extremely simple concept that really explains why certain pieces of marketing work.

It's going to help you take who you are as a coach and as a business owner and really

distill it down into a really distinct message, which is incredibly powerful for communicating with an audience.

The other reason I really, really love this book is because if you look inside, there are actually tons of spots for you to write in the book.

Now, I don't personally write in my books, so I didn't do it, but the activities that are in this book I have actually done, and they are extremely powerful.

It's not one of those books that's going to leave you at all, science or no action.

It's a book that is very, very action-forward, and that's something I definitely appreciate, so check those books out in 2025, and

if you're looking for my top five best book to read for self-development books of all time, definitely check out our previous writing on my best book to read for self-development books for 2024.

Those are my OGs. I highly recommend you read those ones first, but otherwise, these ones are good.

Next step, by the way, if there's a self-help book that you're loving right now,

I would love to hear which one it is in the comments, so let me know, and maybe I'll read and review some of the ways over in 2026; otherwise, I'll you in the next post.
